Mickel Extends Lead at Brands Hatch
Brands Hatch hosted Rounds 2 & 3 of the UK National Legends Championship last weekend with a wet and slippery start but the sun soon came out and shone down on Mickel Motorsport.
Saturday 11th April – Round 3
Race 1
John picked his position from the ball draw and found himself starting third row. Would the gamble of running his wet set up pay off? Unfortunately it was the wrong decision under a drying track and without much grip John found the #4 K-Seal lacking grip and the best he could do was to hang onto 6th place at the finish.
Grid Position: 4th
Finish Position: 6th
Race 2
With a reverse grid, John started three rows from the rear. Car set up was perfect and John was able to carve his way through the pack. Suddenly a spinning car positioned itself right in John’s path. The #4 K-Seal Legend had nowhere to go other than to make contact. John t-boned the spinning car. This resulted in John re-joining the race at the rear of the grid. With just bumper damage, John got back into the race and began hunting down the other contenders, passing them one by one, obtaining fastest lap until he reached the leaders. There just weren’t enough laps to make it all the way to the front of the pack and so he happily settled with 4th place.
Grid Position: 20th
Finish Position: 4th
Race 3 – Final
His point’s position from the first two races put John near the rear of the field for the final of the day. With a clear race and no mishaps, John was able to drive his #4 K-Seal legend cleanly through the pack but with not quite enough laps, he settled with 3rd place at the chequered flag.
Grid Position: 19th
Finish Position: 3rd
His points put him second place overall on the day.
Sunday 12th April
Race 1
A fantastic start to the day resulted in the #4 K-Seal Legend taking 1st place at the finish with team mate Henry King taking 2nd
Grid Position: 5th
Finish Position: 1st
Race 2
John started near the rear of the field but was soon hunting down the leaders with some exceptional driving, putting in the fastest lap of the race to forge his way through the pack and finished in 4th place.
Grid Position: 18th
Finish Position: 4th
Race 3 – Final
Starting from 23rd position on the grid, John got a good start and used his race craft and skill to move through the pack. John had reached 6th place when a yellow caution flag came out. This was good news for the #4 K-Seal car as it meant that the gap between it and the leaders had been closed and this had created another chance for John. On the restart the leaders had an early jump and left John with too much to do to take the lead, resulting in a decent 2nd place finish.
Grid Position: 23rd
Finish Position: 2nd
John finished second overall on the day and this, combined with his overall podium finish on Saturday and a head start from Oulton Park on the Championship points means John has extended his lead in the Championship.
