Welcome to Mickel Motorsport

Our team of passionate amateur volunteers was established in 2010 utilising the many years of race driver and race car preparation and set up experience of John Mickel, who has World, European, British and Championship titles aplenty over his 40 years driving experience. Combining John’s experience with volunteers who are passionate about assisting drivers to achieve their ambitions and goals as crew members, we now have a very successful motorsport platform.
Our family based platform is respected for mentoring young individuals who need some experience as a crew member or a young driver who want to understand the handling and set up of a race car through to those experienced volunteers who want to be part of the wider race community at circuits across the UK.
"This fantastic group of volunteers has come together over the last two and a half decades to create an incredibly supportive and very knowledgeable team who all pull together because they love it so much."
"They use this as a break from their normal work environment and every day lives as a way to de stress and gain race prep experience and to feel powerful in the fact that that their individual contributions create success. Many bring their wives and children to their most local track.
"My wife and children are very involved, when they aren’t earning their own income or attending college, in making this race family so successful both on and off track."

Meet a few members of our team

Gary from Surrey, is a Commercial Flight Training Instructor.
"The reason I volunteer is because I have to satisfy the bug that is motor racing! I'm passionate about building and preparing race cars, then seeing them perform in the hands of our drivers. The challenge and excitement along with the camaraderie of a group of like-minded volunteers is the reason we all do it for free."

Darren and “Little Dave” are one of a few father and son duos amongst our volunteers. Darren is an HGV technician for Uttlesford District Council and a class 4 and 7 MOT tester and “Little Dave” is at secondary school.
"Racing is my life and Mickel Motorsport is my second family. It's great to be able to bring my shadow (aka Little Dave my son) with me and watch him grow and be given more opportunities than I had as a child and to also be part of the Mickel Motorsport family and to learn the life lesson of volunteering.."

Gareth, from Lancashire is a Director of a family run business in the industrial door industry.
“I enjoy volunteering at MML to get away from the stress of running the business and spending time with the team who have become my extended race family. My wife and children sometimes join us if we are at a track close to home and they love it. My Dad lives in Scotland and now has the bug so joins as a crew member when we attend Knockhill.”

Paul, is a window cleaner in Cambridge.
“This is my second family and John is my cousin. It is great to get to meet the other team members regularly and I love the fact these volunteers come from all over the country to give their free time. It is one big happy family.”

Julie, from Newbury, currently works in a part time roll as a Payroll Administrator for an accountant.
“I am now partly retired and racing has been a part of my life since childhood, having grown up around the stock car tracks, which is how I know John. I love being able to still be part of the action and helping keep the team fuelled with good hearty food each race weekend. It's an incredible way to experience the sport, which is why you can find me also helping out another friend in the Pickup racing championship too!”
Mia aged 19 is the newest volunteer. She was looking for work experience as a race car mechanic. Her parents knew John from his stock car days so made the approach.
“I’m really keen to get involved in the motorsport scene as a mechanic but experience is very hard to find. John has provided me with a fantastic opportunity volunteering for 2025. I’m very excited about the opportunity of working alongside like-minded volunteers who have developed their skills over many years having a passion for motorsport.”
